AdminHistoryIn 1864, a Catholic mission was formed at Elsecar (next to the railway station), presided over by the Rev. C. J. Locke. On Easter Monday, 17 Apr 1865, the foundation stone of a Catholic School Chapel was laid at Stubbin, Elsecar and the Chapel was formally opened the following year on 22 Apr 1866 by the Catholic Bishop of Beverley. Rev. C. J. Locke was appointed resident priest of the Chapel which served the Catholic community of Stubbin, Hoyland and Elsecar with accommodation for 200-300 people.

The mission at Elsecar was later transferred to Hoyland in 1897. The current Church building opened on 26 Feb 1929 and was consecrated on 3 Jul 1954. In 2007, the Church of Sacred Heart and St Helen at Hoyland merged with Goldthorpe (Sacred Heart) and Wombwell (St Michael and All Angels).

The Church is situated on West Street, Hoyland and is in the deanery of Barnsley in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hallam.
