AdminHistoryReverend Meerperdas Edward Charles (Father Charles) (1928- ) was the first incumbent vicar from S E Asia to serve in Britain. Born in Malaya, he was educated at the United Theological College, Bangalore, and was ordained in Singapore. He served as a deacon at Christ Church, Malacca, and then curate at St Andrew's Cathedral in Singapore, later becoming Priest-in-Charge at St Paul's, Singapore. In 1960, after studying at the University of Cambridge, he became vicar of St Batholomew, Sheffield.

In 1964 he became the Malayan Christian Council chaplain to the University of Singapore, and was later appointed General Secretary of the Council of Churches of Malaya. In 1966 he became a vicar at Erdington in Birmingham (Warwickshire). In late 1978 he was appointed vicar of Sheffield, St Augustine, Endcliffe, retiring in 1990.

Charles' paternal grandfather was the first London Mission minister in south India and his maternal grandfather was the first Church Missionary Society missionary in south India.
