TitleLetters addressed to David Mushet at Alfreton Iron Works, Derbyshire and Coleford, Gloucestershire
AdminHistoryDavid Mushet (1772 - 1847) was a Scottish-born metallurgist and authority on the manufacture of iron. The chief of Mushet's inventions, all of which relate to improvements in the methods of manufacturing iron and steel, was the one patented in 1800 for the preparation of steel from bar-iron by a direct process. The patent was sold to a Sheffield firm for £3,000.

From 1792 Mushet was employed by the Clyde Iron Works until his dismissal in 1800. He was then at the Calder Iron Works until 1805, when he came to England. By 1807 he was at the Alfreton Iron Works, Derbyshire, while from 1812 he is described as 'of Coleford, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire' where he had property in the district.

He died at Monmouth on 13 Jun 1847.

His youngest son was Robert Forester Mushet (1811 - 1891), also a metallurgist. In 1870 Samuel Osborn met Robert Forester Mushet, an iron master working in the Forest of Dean where he was producing a new alloy steel, considered far superior to crucible steel. Osborn bought the sole rights to manufacture 'R. Mushet's Special Steel' (R.M.S) and Mushet's two sons, Henry and Edward, moved up to Sheffield to oversee its manufacture.
