Admin HistoryJohn Stewart was born at Brough in Whalsay on 18 July 1903. His parents were Magnus Stewart, a fisherman, and Janet Anderson, both of Whalsay.

He was educated at the Brough School and later the Anderson Educational Institute in Lerwick. He studied at Aberdeen University and became a teacher in Aberdeen.

Stewart was particularly interested in linguistics and history and was a keen archaeologist. He was a frequent contributor to the New Shetlander. His major study of the place-names of Shetland was posthumously published as 'Shetland Place-Names' in 1987. He died in 1977.
