TitleBruce of Symbister Papers
Admin HistoryThe Bruces of Symbister were an important Shetland landed family from the late 16th century until the third decade of the 20th century, when the estate got into financial difficulties. They were based at Symbister in Whalsay, but owned land throughout Shetland, particularly in Whalsay, Nesting and Dunrossness. This collection was formed by W.A. Bruce (1863-1944), the last laird, and his brother R. Stuart Bruce (1873-1951) an antiquarian based in Edinburgh. It comprises Bruce family papers, and some material and correspondence from elsewhere. On R. Stuart Bruce’s death it was deposited in the Scottish Record Office, and eventually transferred to the Shetland Archives under charge and superintendence of the Keeper of the Records of Scotland.
