ActivityFly-half, played for Cambridge University, Watsonian FC, London Scottish, Aberdeenshire, Barbarian FC, Scotland XV and Scotland (1968-1970, 8 caps, 9 points). The most memorable moment of his playing career was Scotland's 1970 Calcutta Cup victory over England. At 25 he suffered a serious knee injury that ended his sporting career. Took up journalism, joining the BBC in 1972, reading horse racing results but, made the BBC's official rugby union correspondent in 1983, he has covered every Rugby World Cup from its inception in 1987 until 2015. Retired 2018.
