| AdminHistory | Samuel Goodenough (1743-1827), bishop of Carlisle and botanist, born Kimpton, near Weyhill, Hampshire, 29 April 1743. Educated at at Westminster School. Matriculated from Christ Church, Oxford, 9 June 1760. Graduated BA on 9 May 1764 and proceeded MA on 25 June 1767 and DCL on 11 July 1772.
Under-master of Westminster School, 1766-1770. Married Elizabeth née Ford 17 April 1770. Established his own very successful private school in Ealing, Middlesex, 1772. Appointed canon of St George's, Windsor, 3 February 1798. Goodenough's primary interest was botany and was instrumental in foundation of the Linnean Society in 1788, and held positions of treasurer and vice-president at various times.
Dean of Rochester, 27 August 1802. Educated the sons of George III and William Henry Cavendish Cavendish-Bentinck, third duke of Portland. Nominated bishop of Carlisle, November 1807, and consecrated in the Chapel Royal, Whitehall, on 13 February 1808.
Died Worthing, Sussex 12 August 1827. 'Goodenia' named in his honour. |
