- AGARDH, J.G. (23 letters): Lund, 1885-1897 [All letters from Agardh are currently missing from the collection and need locating] 1) Lund, 26 May [1887?] [Missing] Apologies for the delay in replying. Has been working on Australian algae. Offers identifications of some algae from Weymouth, 'Mesogloia' etc., but complains of their condition. Sends algae asked for by Holmes.
2) Lund, 18 August [1887?] [Missing] Thanks for letter and specimens sent in June. Sending Australian duplicates by a Swedish friend.
3) Lund, 27 January 1885 [Missing] Gives identifications of plants sent by Holmes in November: Nos. 93 - 120, 152, and 155.
4) Lund, 17 April 1889 [Missing] Thanks for letter & algae sent on 6th April and comments on these. Got a set of Ceylon [Sri Lankan] algae. Thinks that many algae are probably wrongly named by authors.
5) Lund, 23 July 1889 [Missing] Thanks for letter of July 11th. Puzzled about 'Rhodomenia palmetta' and very interested in another, which he says is "no 'Calliblepharis'".
6) Lund, 04 October 1889 [Missing] Has received parcel posted on Sept. [September] 26th of very interesting specimens, esp. [especially] 'Epymenia capensis'. Thinks the plant sent as 'Botryoglossum platycarpum' is a new genus and should be named by Holmes. Comments on other plants.
7) Lund, 02 February 1890 [Missing] Thanks for parcel. Comments on various species and on Ferguson's plants. His own collection very incomplete. Offers some Australian plants and many of his publications. Asks if anything known of a West Indian catalogue of algae.
8) Lund, 29 February 1890 [Missing] Thanks for letter and Mr Murray's work. Convinced that the plant "like 'Botryocarpa'" is a new genus and should be named 'Holmesia': asks for a specimen with [cyclocarps?]. Gives list of algae contained in his parcel.
9) List of algae dated 11 April 1890 headed "AGARDH J.G." [Missing]
10) Lund, 11 April 1890 [Missing] Thanks for letter of March 3rd. Sends back Holmes' [remittenda?] and a new distribution of Australian algae. Answers various questions from Holmes' letter.
11) Lund, 15 February 1891 [Missing] Thanks for letter of Feb. [February] 8th and list of marine algae. No time to give a "friendly criticism", but offers certain comments. Describes his method of cutting sections, with a drop of [?] acid added to the slice under the obsecting glass, esp. [especially] for the 'Floridiae'. Needs provenance of the unnamed plants before offering suggestions.
12) Lund, 13 January 1892 [Missing] Sending another parcel of Australian duplicates received from Baron F. von Mueller.
13) Lund, 9 March 1892 [Missing] Received letter of 24th Feb. [February] and parcel. Thanks for the plants for his own herbarium. Mention of a 'Pachymenia' and of an apparently new genus, a form of 'Delesseria', which he names ['Silaephocladia'?]. Letter ends with a commentary in Latin on various specimens.
14) Lund, 22 January 1894 [Missing] Sends a collection of Australian algae, and comments on the plants sent by Holmes. Would like new specimens of 'Gelidium aculeatum'.
15) Lund, 09 February 1894 [Missing] Thanks for 'Gelidium aculeatum'. Comments on "'Phacleo carpus'-like plant" - thinks it is a new species of 'Ptilota'. Puzzled by plant labelled 'Rhabdonia mollis' and thinks it is 'Areschougia ligulata'. Speaks of a 'Eucheuma' of Farlow.
16) Lund, 23 February 1894 [Missing] Has returned Holmes' specimens, with comments. More about 'Ptilota' specimen. Very impressed by the variety of the Cape specimens, which seem to include a new genus of great interest, somewhat like 'Chrysomenia'.
17) Lund, 29 March 1894 [Missing] New plant from Trinidad resembling 'Caulerpa'. Urges Holmes to publish something about the Cape plants soon.
18) Lund, 16 April 1894 [Missing] Has no wish to describe any of the sent by Holmes. Thanks for specimens.
19) Lund, 28 February 1895 [Missing] Has sent a parcel of plants to the Pharmaceutical Society, with labels giving the genus of each.
20) Lund, 17 February 1896 [Missing] Replies to letter of Feb. [February] 12th. Notes on 'Polyopes constrictus' and on [Shcmitz?]'s article published posthumously. Sends a small fragment of 'Microcoelia chilentis'.
21) Lund, 06 June 1897 [Missing] Has sent a parcel. Hopes for Holmes' publication soon.
22) Near Lund, 21 July 1897 [Missing] Acknowledges letter of June 27th and parcel received in very good condition and English algae. It will take some time to name and return all the plants, but will do so on his return to Lund, health permitting.
23) Lund, 13 September 1897 [Missing] Has now examined the contents of the parcel, and has determined some of the specimens, but others in too bad a condition. Thanks for gifts for his herbarium. Would like to see Holmes' article on Japanese algae.
- ALLARDYCE, CATHERINE (7 letters): Cromarty, 1883-1897. N.B. letters 2 and 3 are addressed to Mrs Hope. Also includes 2 sheets of notes and 1 preserved algae specimen. 1) Cromarty, 31 March 1883 - to Mr. Holmes Thanks Holmes for his letter of 22nd February. Regrets her knowledge of northern algae is limited. Notes that she collected as many specimens as she could from Cromarty, and she promises to send him a few specimens. She ends with a list of her Cromarty findings.
2) Cromarty, 16 January 1886 - to Mrs. Hope Sends specimen of 'Haugeria' 1m - was looking to send her other specimens, but sent this in the meantime as she felt that this was better than nothing.
3) Cromarty, 28 January 1886 - to Mrs. Hope Sends specimens of 'Hydrolapatheom samguineum', some with capsular fruits
4) Cromarty, 22 February 1892 - to Mr. Holmes Her collecting days have ended as she is turning 80 in July. She refers to his letter of 22nd February 1883 and confirms that the "small brown tufts" are 'Alaria'. Rich harvest with high tides in March, but some specimens found in August - mentions various ones.
5) Cromarty, 21 March 1892 - to Mr. Holmes Would like to give a list of her specimens to Professor Trail [Traill?], but too tired. Her specimens from rock pools at Cromarty are different from Mr Holmes's from Broughty Ferry. Has not succeeded in getting anyone to carry on her studies.
6) Cromarty, 08 April 1893 - to Mr. Holmes Has found a better specimen of 'Stenogramma interruptum', which was the plant Holmes asked her to look for in Cromarty, as she has her doubts that the last specimen she sent him was feminine. The specimen she now sends him was found by Miss Falmouth and encloses it. She has been unable to leave her house, and all she is able to do is look out of her windows.
7) Cromarty, 03 May 1893 - to Mr. Holmes The weather has been fine, and she is sorry to hear that Mr Holmes has been unable to enjoy it as it is perfect for marine pursuits. Offers help to anyone interested in marine algae. Asks for the return of her specimen '[Kloa?] latissima', but tells him not to worry if he has mislaid it or cut it up.
