Description | Correspondence of E.M. Holmes and individuals with the surname beginning with P. Details of the author, number of letters, place of writing and dates are listed below:
- PARFITT, EDWARD (5 letters): Exeter, 1884-1891 [Gardener and librarian, 1820-1893] 1) Devon & Exeter Institution, 11 November 1884 Is about to tackle the mosses of Devon for a continuation of the Cryptogamic Flora. Asks for a copy of Holmes's published list of his [Parfitt's] mosses from the Transactions of the Plymouth Institution.
2) Exeter, 21 November 1889 Did not know Holmes was interested in marine algae, or he would have submitted his list to him. Surprised that Holmes thinks Dorset to be richer than Devon in algae.
3) Exeter, 24 December 1889 Asks for opinion on a weed gathered in 1864 on sandstone rocks near Torquay which he thinks is 'Sphacellaria' ['Sphacelaria'] 'fusca'. Harvey says Mrs Griffiths found it at Sidmouth.
4) Exeter, 02 January 1890 Thanks for examining the 'Sphacellaria' ['Sphacelaria']. Gives an account of how he found the scattered male fruits of 'Delessaria'.
5) Exeter, 08 May 1891 The collection of marine algae and shells was presented to the Institution by Mrs Griffiths' daughter. Mrs Griffiths also presented sets of her algae to Kew and to the Linnean Society. Asks for Holmes's revised list of marine algae when published.
- PHILLIPS, WILLIAM (2 letters): Shrewsbury, 1872-1874 [FLS 1875. Mycological and antiquary, 1822-1905] 1) Shrewsbury, 30 January 1872 Thanks for funghi. Returns a book sent in error. Errors in naming one or two funghi.
2) Shrewsbury, 14 May 1874 Thanks for parcel and asks for 50 specimens of 'Trichomasis' ['Trichomoniasis'] 'petroselini' for his friend Rev. J.E. Vizi of Welshpool.
- PLEYDELL, MANSELL (1 letter): Retford (Swanage), 1884 [Queen's Own Yeomanry Cavalry. Naturalist 1817-1902] 1) Retford (Swanage), [19 April 1884] Recommends various helpers in the Swanage area, as he will be away when Holmes visits.
- POLLEXFEN, JOHN H. (Rev.) (3 letters): Richmond (Yorkshire), 1883-1891 [Algologist. M.D. Edinburgh. 1813-99] [N.B. Includes specimens of red algae] 1) Richmond, Yorks. [Yorkshire], 09 March 1883 Regrets he cannot answer Holmes's question, as his collection of algae is in Orkney and he has not seen it for 20 years. Suggests Rev. Charles Clouston of Sandwick, Orkney.
2) Richmond, 05 March 1891 Thanks for specimens of 'Sorocarpus uvaformis'. Too busy for two weeks to look over his collection and apologies for his bad memory.
3) Richmond, 19 March 1891 Cannot help about 'Kallymenia' ['Callymenia'] and is afraid the specimens he sends are probably all just 'K. reniformis'. His only specimens of 'Halymenia' from Orkney, which seem to resemble specimens from Devon. Yorkshire weather has been very severe, whereas Orkney winters quite mild and fuschia survives.
[Unumbered] 7 specimens collected between 1839-1850. |
