Title | Sir William Watson, London, to Richard Pulteney |
Description | Has heard through Dr Maxwell Garthshore of Pulteney's desire to see the Hortus Malabaricus. He is sending the volume to be conveyed by Garthshore.
He has no objection to Pulteney's adding Linnæus's name to plates with blacklead pencil. Hopes he will write down the trivial name as well as the specific. Refers to Dr [John] Hill's Hortus Kewensis and the importance of the "calyx in his arrangement." He is impressed by the magnificence of the Hortus Malabaricus. The Royal Society has sent out observers "for the transit of Venus in June next." Those with [Joseph] Banks and Dr [Daniel] Solander will go to the South Sea, two to Hudson's Bay, two more to Cherry Island near the North Cape and others to Ireland. The phenomenon will not be visible again for more than a century. His son is pleased that Dr [William] Hudson has been elected physician to St Thomas's hospital. |
