| AdminHistory | Spencer Savage (1886-1966) was appointed Clerk at the Linnean Society in 1911 until his retirement in 1951. He took time off to serve as a gunner on the Western Front in the first World War and returned to the Society in March 1919. Savage became Librarian and Assistant Secretary in 1929 and during his tenure he became a distinguished Linnean scholar and compiled for the Society A Catalogue of the Linnean Herbarium (1945). |
Theodore O'Grady (1919-c1996) was Clerk of the Linnean Society between 1935-1951, excepting the years between 1939-1946, where he was subscribed to war service with the British Army. His main duties were concerned with the Society's accounts. In 1951 he was appointed General Secretary and then went on to became Executive Secretary in 1966 until his retirement in July 1979.
Having worked closely with Spencer Savage during his time at the Society, he had acquired from him an abiding interest in the Society's history and well-being. On his retirement he received a book with the signatures of some 630 Fellows and Associates and a subscribed sum of money to enable him and Mrs O'Grady to take a holiday in Sweden visiting places especially associated with Linnaeus. |
| Lindsay Fleming (c1902-1966) is best known for being the author of 'History of Pagham in Sussex, Illustrating the Administration of an Archiepiscopal Hundred: The Decay of Manorial Organisation and the Rise of a Seaside Resort,' which was published between 1949-1950 in three volumes. Fleming lived at Aldwick Grange in Aldwick, West Sussex and was the original local historian of the parish. He left an invaluable document providing detailed historical information on Pagham, Aldwick, Rose Green and Bognor Regis. He died in 1966, aged 64. |

Contains a list of the correspondence between William Borrer and various persons from organisations such as the Linnean Society, Trinity College, Cambridge and Kew Gardens Herbarium, entitled 'Schedule of William Borrer Correspondence', dated 30 November 1804 to 8 December 1861. Correspondents include Dawson Turner, W. J. Hooker and J. E. Smith. The list is thought to have been written by Lindsay Fleming.
Also includes a collection of 15 letters between [Oliver] Buckle, Lindsay Fleming and Theodore O'Grady regarding research being conducted by both Fleming and Buckle on William Borrer including their use of the Borrer papers held at the Linnean Society library, dated 2 October 1962 to 6 November 1965. |
