ActivityMA Oxford 1780. MD 1784. FRS 1788. FLS and founder member of Linnean Society, 1788. Studied with Antoine Laurent de Jussieu (GB/110/1/44) in Paris, 1781-1782, and Pierre Marie Auguste Broussonet (GB/110/1/27) in Montpellier. Succeeded father as Sherardian Professor of Botany, Oxford, 1784-1796. Outbid by James Edward Smith (GB/110/1/11) for collections of Linnaeus, 1784. Travelled in Greece with Ferdinand Bauer, 1786-1787, and Cyprus, Asia Minor, 1794-1795. Died before completing "Flora Graeca", which was handed over to Smith, and after Smith's death John Lindley, and illustrated by Bauer. His will established Sibthorpian chair of rural economy at Oxford, to be held by professor of botany.
