ActivityFLS 1811. MP for Sudbury, 1784-1790, and 1796-1802. MP for Camelford, 1791-1796. MP for Norwich, 1802-1806, and 1807-1830. Close associate of William Wilberforce and involved with Abolitionist movement. Leading role in the Dissenters' demands for the repeal of the Test and Corporation Acts. Responsible for championing the Doctrine of the Trinity Act 1813, known as 'Mr William Smith's Bill', which made it legal to practice Unitarianism, and successfully saw through repeal of the Test Acts in 1828.
