Published biographies of Lorenzo de' Medici (1796) and Pope Leo X (1805). MP Liverpool, 1806, advocate for abolition of the slave trade. Declared bankrupt in 1816 after collapse of Clarke family bank, and forced to sell Allerton Hall and collections.

Founded the Royal Institution in Liverpool, with Dr Traill, in 1817. Helped establish Liverpool Botanic Garden.
