DescriptionIn July 1979 the Board of Management set up a Working Group to examine how the Commission could contribute to training in engineering, the applied sciences and industrial design. After considering a number of ideas and proposals two schemes, put forward by Imperial College, Cranfield Institute of Technology and the Royal College of Art, were decided upon for short-term support by the Commission. These were:

a. Cranfield/Royal College of Art.
The appointment of two Research Fellows, with industrial experience, to work respectively at Cranfield and the RCA under joint supervision on
i. problems in engineering product design with particular reference to computer-aided design;
ii. fostering collaboration in the teaching of engineering design and industrial design.

b. Imperial College/Royal College of Art.
An industrial studentship scheme to admit selected engineering graduates from industry to a new two-year postgraduate course in industrial design engineering to be provided jointly by Imperial College and the RCA (on a trial basis).
