Description
Correspondence, 1934, 1937, 1946, 1952, 1956-60, concerning a licence for alterations; a licence to the London Associated Electricity Undertakings to run a cable duct beneath the property; a licence for user as livery stables; the wish of Mr. Mathias to buy the freehold; lengthy negotiations regarding the obtaining in the High Court of a Judgement for possession against Mr. Robert A. Barley the sub-lessee and owner of the Knightsbridge Riding School at 34, the Commission's wish to convert the premises into a residential cottage, the County Court's refusal to grant a new lease to Mr. Barley on the expiry of his lease, interventions and representations by the Lord Mayor, Sir Patrick Spens, M.P., the City Remembrancer and others pointing out Mr. Barley's importance as one of the few remaining providers of ceremonial horses and coachmen and of horses for distinguished local residents and visitors to ride in Hyde Park; Proceedings against Mr. Barley, more than a year after the expiry of the lease, to remove himself and his horses; difficulties presented by Mrs. Mathias, tenant at will at 34, over vacating the premises and her eventual surrender; Mr. Barley's claim for compensation under the Landlord and Tenant Act, 1954; the sale of 24B Hyde Park Gate (formerly 34 Queen's Gate Mews) to Bangkok Bank Ltd. and the conversion of the premises by the Commission prior to the sale.
