Title
The Institute of Physics, The Physical Society and the Optical Society.
Description
In 1924, the Commission received the first communication from The Physical Society. In 1926, the Commissioners offered space at 1 Lowther Gardens to the Institute of Physics and Societies with related aims and in 1927, The Institute of Physics, The Physical Society and the Optical Society moved into Lowther Gardens. In 1932, The Physical Society and the Optical Society amalgamated. In 1939, The Institute of Physics was evacuated to the University of Reading, returning to London in 1945 to Albemarle Street and in 1949 moving to 47 Belgrave Square. The Physical Society took over the Institute's space at Lowther Gardens. In 1960, The Institute of Physics and The Physical Society amalgamated. The headquarters activities moved to Belgrave Square and the publishing activities remained at Lowther Gardens. Between 1970 and 1975, the publishing activities moved out gradually from Lowther Gardens.
