Title
Correspondence and Papers, 1856-1909
Description
The correspondence in this series was included in a rough list of 'Miscellaneous Papers, 1849-1909' compiled by Anthony James, then Assistant Secretary to the Commission, probably in about 1948. It is possible that these Miscellaneous Papers are what was sometimes referred to as 'General Estate'. The series ends in 1909 at about the time Evelyn Shaw, the Assistant Secretary, took over as Secretary from Sir Arthur Bigge and it is likely that the file numbering sequence of 1 to 120 (still in use in the archive) was introduced then and this 'Miscellaneous' section discontinued. (There is another series of Miscellaneous Correspondence in the archive, dating mainly from the early 20th Century, dealing largely with requests for financial assistance. See RC/50).
Letters and papers from the 'Miscellaneous Papers' between 1849 and 1855 were filed into the main 1851 Exhibition correspondence, A, probably by Digby Sturch, Secretary from 1947, and are now to remain there. The remainder, from 1856 to 1909, form this series of Correspondence and Papers.
