Description | This parish provides a particularly good example of industry in a rural setting. The River Don, in its upper course, flows swiftly and the district was well wooded. Industrial premises dependent on supplies of wood and water included a paper mill (ACM/MAPS/Ecc/188), a tanyard (ACM/MAPS/Ecc/199), Chapeltown Furnace (ACM/MAPS/Ecc/217), a slitting mill and a tilt (ACM/MAPS/Ecc/194 and ACM/MAPS/Ecc/202); some coal was also worked (ACM/MAPS/Ecc/210). The Duke's woods were of great value and were regularly mapped to show the annual falls; the plans of these woods are among the earliest in the collection. |
