AdminHistory | Herbert Memmott (1875-1950), son of Walter and Mary Memmott of Woodseats was a silversmith by trade, and worked with his brothers at Memmott Brothers (Electro-Plate Manufacturers), 20 Cambridge Street. In 1926/7 his younger son, (Herbert) Leslie Memmott joined Bee Brothers of Fargate. When they ceased trading Leslie Memmott continued to supply their customers on his own. His brother, (Cecil) Alexander Memmott (1910-1950) soon joined the company. Initially business was conducted from home but later it moved to Norfolk Street and then to 9 Norfolk Row. The business became a private company limited by shares in May 1938. In 1959 H. Memmott & Sons Limited moved to the old synagogue at 8-10 North Church Street whilst the manufacturing side of the company was at Burgess Street, then Pearl Street and finally at Beighton Road, Hackenthorpe.
In 1938 Herbert Memmott became chairman and following his death (1950) Leslie Memmott became chairman whilst his mother, Martha Louisa Memmott became a shareholder. Margaret Anne Memmott (the wife of Alexander) worked for the company and eventually became a director. George Ronald Memmott (cousin to Leslie and Alexander) also joined the company and became a director. Herbert Leslie Memmott married Ethel Cobb in 1937 and they had two children, David and Barbara Elaine. Miss Cobb had previously been employed by the company and David Memmott eventually became the company Managing Director.
The showroom and sales departments of the company were moved onto one site, Beighton Road, Hackenthorpe, in 1987 and the company was amalgamated into Alan Howard (Stockport) Limited in 1995.
Brand Products included: Myown Products; Blue Pearl; Cherrygloss; Creamfix Hair Cream; Top Ten; Velvaware and Myfoam - with over 100 lines produced. |
