AdminHistoryThe Sheffield Corporation Act, 1920 empowered the Corporation to carry out street widenings and improvements to Pond Street, Holme Lane, Fulwood Road, Sharrow Lane, Langsett Road, Penistone Road, Pinstone Street, Division Street, Middlewood Road, and Bright Street. Also to construct a new street at the end of Poole Road and at the end of Greenland Road. Holly Street was to be stopped up.

Additional tramways at Norwood Lane, Pinstone Street, Attercliffe Common, Bright Street, City Road and Main Road, Darnall, were to be constructed.

The Corporation was also empowered to run additional motor omnibus routes, viz., Aston to Worksop, Swallownest to Dinnington, Todwick Bar to Dinnington, Intake to Woodhouse Mill, Intake to Handsworth, Mosborough to Killamarsh, and Dronfield to Whittington. It also empowered Chesterfield Corporation to run a service from Unstone to Sheffield.

The Corporation was given power to acquire land and premises called Norton House (for a tuberculosis sanatorium); the Norton Hall Estate (for a park or recreation ground) land bounded by Carver Lane / West Street / Holly Lane (for tramway undertaking and municipal offices); land at Rockingham Street / Division Street (fire station extension) and Coal Aston Aerodrome.

The Corporation was empowered to carry on the business of dairymen purveyors of milk within the City.

Additional housing and sanitary regulations were incorporated in the Act.

For the purpose of encouraging and facilitating the erection of buildings the Corporation was allowed to assist in the formation and in the financing of housing societies.

Clauses for the consolidation of local rates were included in the Act as were further powers for the Corporation to borrow money for specific purposes.

The Corporation was empowered to carry on an aerodrome undertaking. It was allowed to incorporate further sections of the 1918 Sheffield Corporation Act.

Clauses relating to the purchase by the Corporation of the Gas Company, though drawn up in the Bill, were not included in the Act.
