The Lancasterian School closed in January 1939, and the school moved to premises adjoining Hillsborough County School, becoming known as Hillsborough Special School. In June 1945 the school split to form separate Junior & Senior departments, changing its name to Wadsley Bridge Special School. In 1958 the Junior school transferred to premises formerly used by Wadsley Bridge County School, combining with Hillsborough Junior Special School, and became known as Wadsley Bridge Special School (Junior E.S.N. Boys). The original school became a Senior school only, known as Wadsley Bridge Special School (Senior E.S.N.Boys). In January 1975, the separate schools became known as Beeley Wood Primary and Beeley Wood Secondary.
The Primary school closed in 1987, and the Secondary school closed two years later.
Lancasterian schools were named after joseph Lancaster (1778 - 1838). Lancaster’s theory of education (both curriculum and building design) was published as Improvements in Education, as it respects the industrious classes of the community in 1803, together with The British System of Education: Being a Complete Epitome of the Improvements and Inventions Practised at the Royal Free Schools, Borough-Road, and Southwark in 1810. Lancaster’s theory was based on the ‘monitorial system’ whereby a student passed on their knowledge to other pupils. He also specified in great detail the design of school buildings as an aid to learning. |
