AdminHistory | There were originally several schools in the Carbrook area. Before the passing of the 1870 Education Act, Carbrook National School was opened and this was followed by the opening of Carbrook Board School in 1874, Newhall in September 1873 and shortly afterwards, Attercliffe Board School. Free education was introduced at the Board School on 1st September 1891. Carbrook Board School became Carbrook Council School in 1905. Carbrook Board School catered for senior pupils from 1889 and also for infants and mixed junior pupils. In the immediate post-war years, the Hill Top and Carbrook elementary schools underwent major changes in reorganisation. Senior pupils over the age of eleven were concentrated in the Coleridge Road Schools. The Carbrook Council Schools became junior and infant schools.
As slum clearance schemes progressed in the Attercliffe and Carbrook areas in the 1960s and more families went to housing estates throughout the city, the numbers of children in attendance at local schools dwindled. The junior department at Carbrook Council School was closed in July 1971 and its pupils transferred to Huntsman's Gardens School. The infants’ department continued until 1975 to cater for children at infant age still residing in the area. |
