AdminHistory | The Ministry of Information was established on 4 September 1939 to coordinate the distribution of 'all government news and information'. It operated through regional committees of full-time staff, supported by a network of local voluntary Information Committees such as that in Sheffield.
The aim of local voluntary committees was to 'maintain public morale and unity of purpose'. They distributed publicity supplied by the Ministry though they were not responsible for supplying information to the press or for technical information (such as that relating to ARP matters). The task of convening the Sheffield committee was delegated by the Town Clerk to the City Librarian, Mr J. P. Lamb.
Sheffield came under the jurisdiction of the Chief Regional Information Officer Region II (North Eastern) based in Leeds.
The Executive Committee comprised approximately 30 members - representatives of political parties (Conservative, Labour, National Liberal, Liberal Nation and national Labour), a representative from each of education services, Municipal Progressive party, ARP Publicity Services, Woodhouse Co-operative Society, Cooperative Societies, Trades and Labour Council, press, Chamber of Commerce, Publicity Club, [4] 'promient citizens, Works Welfare Officers, Cinematographic Exhibitors Association, Womens Voluntary Service and the Council of Social Service. |
