AdminHistory | The mission of St Catherine was founded from St Marie's by Canon Walshaw to serve the Catholic community in the developing Sheffield suburbs of Burngreave and Pitsmoor. The Duke of Norfolk gave St Catherine's its first site in Andover Street, and defrayed the cost of the two-storey building designed to serve as a school and a temporary church. Messrs Hadfield and Son were the architects and John Pearson the builder. The school chapel was opened by Bishop Cornthwaite in 1876 and Father Luke Burke from Thirsk was appointed priest of the mission.
In May 1883, the Sisters of Mercy were sent from the Order's Convent (in Commercial Road in London's East End) to 82 Andover Street to teach in St Catherine's School. Soon, the growing congregation required a larger space for worship and a freestanding chapel was added on the site. The foundation stone was laid by Canon Walshaw on 3 Aug 1884. The architects again were Messrs Hadfields with Frederick Ashforth (based on Minna Road, Burngreave, Sheffield) appointed contractor.
The Duke of Norfolk later gave a new site for a permanent church for St Catherine's in Burngreave Road. Bishop Cowgill blessed the foundation stone of the new church on 16 Jul 1925 and presided at its opening on 26 Nov 1926. Charles Edward Fox and Son of Halifax were the architects. After the opening of the new church, the old chapel in Andover Street continued as part of the school premises, but the old school was eventually replaced by a new building in Firshill Crescent, Shirecliffe, Sheffield.
The Church is situated on the corner of Burngreave Road and Melrose Road, Burngreave, Sheffield and is in Sheffield North deanery of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hallam. |
