In 1910 a private company was set up to sink and operate a colliery at Askern. The Askern Coal and Iron Company Limited was set up to acquire and develop the mining options at Askern which had been granted to the Don Coal and Iron Company Limited. The colliery was owned by the Askern Coal and Iron Company Limited until nationalisation in 1947.
