TitleBarber, Walker and Company Limited (Bentley Colliery)
AdminHistoryMessrs Barber, Walker of Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, was a long-established mining company, tracing its origins back to c.1680. The company was concerned about the exhaustion of the Top Hard seam on the Nottinghamshire Coalfield and looked to South Yorkshire in search of new coal workings.

The company began to sink Bentley Colliery in Doncaster in 1905. Coal was reached in 1907 and the Barnsley seam in 1908.

On 20 Nov 1931 there was an explosion of firedamp which caused the loss of 45 lives and numerous serious injuries.

Bentley Colliery passed into public ownership in 1947.
