TitleWharncliffe Silkstone Colliery Company Limited (Wharncliffe Silkstone Colliery)
AdminHistoryWharncliffe Silkstone Colliery was situated near the hamlet of Pilley, four miles south of Barnsley. The colliery was sunk between 1853 - 1854 under the direction of Messrs Woodhouse and Jeffcock. The colliery took its name jointly from Lord Wharncliffe (the chief royalty owner) and the Silkstone seam (the first seam to be worked).

The Wharncliffe Silkstone Colliery Company was formed in 1879 to run the business. The company owned and worked the colliery until nationalisation in 1947.

Coal winding ceased in 1966 with the remaining coal drawn at Rockingham Colliery.
