AdminHistory | Joseph Hunter was born in New Church Street, Sheffield in 1783 the son of Michael Hunter, cutler - mother died when he was 4 - brought up by Rev. Joseph Evans, Minister of Upper Chapel and was educated at Mr Sorby's School Attercliffe and Unitarian College, York.
He was interested in local history and topography from an early age. He published 'History of Hallamshire' 1819, 'South Yorkshire' 1828/1831 "Hallamshire Glossary' 1829 etc. In 1833 he became a commissioner of the Pubic Record Office and in 1838 was appointed Assistant Keeper 1st Class responsible for the Queen's Remembrancer's Records.
He died in London and is buried at Ecclesfield. |
