A Tontine was a financial scheme whereby subscribers received an annuity during their life, which increased as the numbers declined by death, until the last survivor enjoyed the whole income. They were often used to fund the building of houses and hotels.

Note a Theo Davye Garencieres is known to have lived in York in 1774; Jerom Dring in York in 1750 and 1798 and Nathaniel Cholmley in Housham, Yorkshire in 1750 and 1791.
