Title | Probably an almost contemporary copy of a Charter confirming a grant from Thomas de Chaworth knight lord of Norton to John Lutrell, son of Sir Alexander, and Rose the grantor's younger daughter and wife of the said John and their heirs, of the manor of Heytredding in the soke of Norton [Derbyshire], which Alice Castelayn had by grant for life, with appurtenances and common of pasture for all animals except goats, also common of pasture in Rohaghe for eight oxen and six cows and right of entry into the wood of Rohagh, and the right of taking wood for enclosing their meadow. Failing direct heirs of John and Rose the land was to revert to the grantor. |
Description | Vellum : one skin.
Notes : a duplicate of this charter appears in JC/300, which is endorsed "a deed of Chaworth Herdings 1344" on what authority does not appear.
Among the witnesses there given are Sir Thomas de Furnyval [Sir Thomas de Furnival], Sir Adam de Everingham, Sir Walter de Gaushull, Sir William de Fulkingham then abbot of Beauchief, Sir Roger de Brailesford then rector of Dronfeld [Dronfield, Derbyshire], John Dencourt, John de Everyngham.
The names of five of these witnesses appear in two charters c. 1300 and 1312. See Addy, S. O. "Historic Memorials of Beauchief Abbey" (1878), pages 63 and 64. To judge from this document Addy's date of 1423 for William de Fulkingham's abbotship of Beauchief is unlikely to be correct, see the same reference on page 72. It is probably safe to date this document c. 1310. |
