Samuel Newbould and Company Limited, Edge Tool Manufacturers, Fender Makers and Saw Makers, Sheffield The original family business, from which the firm of Samuel Newbould and Company originated, was established around 1735 by Thomas Newbould, a shear-smith (1714-1782). His third son Samuel (1752-1842) inherited the business. In 1781 (from a directory entry), the business changed its name to Samuel Newbould, Shearsmith, Coalpit Lane, Sheffield. The business moved within a few years to the Bridgefield Works. At some point during the early nineteenth century (perhaps earlier), the Newboulds also began steelmaking. In 1868 Samuel Newbould and Company became a Limited Company. They moved premises again to Newhall Road. In 1900, the company was absorbed by Sanderson Brothers and Company, becoming Sanderson Brothers and Newbould Limited.

In 1900, the company absorbed Samuel Newbould and Company with its goodwill, trademarks and world-wide reputation for saws, edge tools and machine knives. The company became Sanderson Brothers and Newbould.
