AdminHistory | The original family business, from which the firm of Samuel Newbould and Company originated, was established around 1735 by Thomas Newbould, a shear-smith (1714-1782).
His third son Samuel (1752-1842) inherited the business. In 1781 (from a directory entry), the business changed its name to Samuel Newbould, Shearsmith, Coalpit Lane, Sheffield. The business moved within a few years to the Bridgefield Works. At some point during the early nineteenth century (perhaps earlier), the Newboulds also began steelmaking.
In 1868 Samuel Newbould and Company became a Limited Company. They moved premises again to Newhall Road.
In 1900, the company merged with Sanderson Brothers and Company to become Sanderson Brothers and Newbould. The new company was registered on 26 Aug 1901.
