AdminHistory | The Sheffield Amenities Council was formed on 26 Nov 1970 at a meeting of representatives of local societies with interests in local history, natural history and conservation. Its stated objects were to act as an independent council for protecting and enhancing the amenities of Sheffield; to co-ordinate the activities of the constituent Societies; and to provide an information service for them.
Decreasing membership and a lack of nominations for executive offices in the early 1980s forced the Council to question its position as a representative body of local interests able to make a wide cross-sectional comment to the local Planning Authority. Following an unsuccessful attempt to attract local societies and individuals as new members, it was unanimously resolved at a Special General Meeting on 1 Oct 1984 to dissolve the Sheffield Amenities Council.
As a consequence its funds were disposed of and its records deposited with Sheffield City Archives. |
