Craven Brothers and Company was established in 1867. They manufactured carriages and wagons for the railways. The company became Cravens Limited in 1891. According to Whitakers Red Book (1914) the company specialised in 'high class rolling stock of every description' including Pullman cars, wheels and axles and iron work. The company employed 800 to 1,000 people. In 1919 the company's name changed to Cravens Railway Carriage and Wagon Company Limited. John Brown and Company acquired a signifcant shareholding in Craven's the same year. The company name changed back to Cravens Limited in 1954 when it finally became a wholly owned subsidiary of John Brown.

Davy Brothers, Sheffield:
Davy Brothers was established by Joseph Davy, David Davy and Dennis Davy in 1830. They were originally based at the Soho Foundry and Engine Works, 1 Pear Street, Norris Fields, Sheffield. In 1840 the company built the first railway locomotive in Sheffield for the Sheffield and Rotherham Railway. During the late 1840s to early 1850s the company moved to Park Iron Works, Sheffield. According to the Stock Exchange Year Book (1908), the company was incorporated as a Public Limited Company in 1872. The company was registered on 10 Oct, to acquire the business of the firm of the same name as engineers, boiler makers and steel rollers. In c.1921 a large new works opened at Darnall, Sheffield. In 1936 the firm cquired British Chilled Roll and Engineering Company of Middlesbrough. In 1937 the company changed its name to Davy and United Engineering Company.

Both companies later amalgamated with Markham and Company Limited, general engineers, Chesterfield. Markham's was acquired by John Brown and Company, Sheffield in 1937.
