TitleCity of Sheffield Petty Sessional Division - Registers of the Court of Summary Jurisdiction
DescriptionThe registers show summons number; number of case; name of informant; name of defendant; defendant's age if under 16; nature of offence; amount of fine; costs and other orders. The earlier registers give age only if under 16.

The later registers give the defendant's age both over and under 16. The later registers also give date of offence and details of monies found on the defendant. From April 1915 the defendant's plea is registered.

Entries in the existing registers for the borough of Sheffield up to 1915 show that sessions were usually held before E M E Welby, the stipendiary magistrate for the city from 1872-1915. After Welby's retirement no stipendiary magistrate was appointed. Ordinary magistrates continued to preside at the sessions, on a rota basis.
