AdminHistoryMary Anne Rawson was the eldest daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Read. She married W. B. Rawson, son of W .F. Rawson of Nottingham, who died 18 months after the marriage leaving her a widow with a daughter, Elizabeth.

Rawson was an active campaigner for the abolition of the slave trade. She was a founder member of the Sheffield Female Anti Slavery Society. In 1834 she published a collection of poems relating to the abolition campaign. From 1837 Mary was secretary of the Sheffield Ladies Association for the Universal Abolition of Slavery.
DescriptionThis is a collection of Rawson's correspondence mainly relating to family and personal matters. Correspondents include her uncle John Read, her sisters, Elizabeth (who married William Wilson), Catherine, Sarah and Emily, and her brother, Edmund, who was the youngest of Joseph and Elizabeth Read's children. Also included are H. J. Wilson, the Duke of Norfolk and others.
