AdminHistory | Florence Mary Green was born in 1907 in Streatham Hill, London. She attended school in Clapham and later went to Newnham College, Cambridge to study Natural Sciences and Botany. After gaining her PhD she undertook a diploma in Education, having been unable to find a job which would allow her to follow a university career. In 1944, as only her second teaching post, she was appointed as headmistress of Abbeydale Girls' Grammar School, Sheffield where she remained until retirement in 1968.
During this time Dr Green wrote two Biology textbooks and was active in many educational associations as well as sitting as a magistrate from 1959 to 1977. In 1969, she received an Honorary Fellowship from Sheffield Polytechnic, and later her achievements and commitment gained national recognition when she was awarded the CBE. |
