| AdminHistory | These papers were donated to Sheffield Archives in April 1998 by Mr John Shirt, the son of Stanley Shirt, and comprise the personal diaries, papers and wartime correspondence of Stanley Shirt.
Stanley Shirt was born in Walkley in 1920. He worked for J & J Dyson Ltd until he was called up to serve as a member of the Yorkshire & Lancashire Regiment in 1940. He transferred to the Royal Army Service Corps (RASC) in 1941, attaining the rank of Corporal. His tour of duty in the Middle East is recorded in the letters he wrote home and the diaries he kept. He worked briefly at the War Office in London on his return from the Middle East until demobilisation in 1946. Here he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and met his future wife, Marjorie Mole (b.1922) who was serving with the ATS.
Mr Shirt died in May 1989.
