AdminHistory | The Sheffield Women's Printing Co-op Limited was set up in 1980 when a group of women formalised the printing service they provided, unpaid, for the women's movement, community groups, and campaigns. It was formed from a group of women who had got together to provide economic printing services in the voluntary/community sector in 1977. The company was registered in 1982. From its inception the company was entirely staffed by women. This was one of its founding principals, outlined in an article of 1994, viz. "we wanted to set up a workplace which was run entirely by women to learn new skills and to do our bit to challenge the assumption that there always has to be a man behind it somewhere!" The company defined itself as a collective under workers' control - all staff members received the same rate of pay and all took part in decision-making. They catered especially for voluntary, community and campaigning organisations, women's groups, charities, trade unions and self-publishing projects. They also did printing for business. |
