TitleCollected Historical Material
DescriptionThese items were gathered in from a number of sources by Dr Harold Swan, consultant haematologist at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. Some derive from the hospital's Medical Library. Dr Swan then passed all the material to Sheffield University Library, where it was known as the 'University Hospital Archive Collection'. It was transferred to Sheffield Archives in 2001.
Being an artificial collection, the stray official records from individual hospitals have been repatriated with the other records of that hospital. All the other collected unofficial records, memorabilia and personal items are listed here under the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, to where these items originally came.

CustodialHistoryThese items were gathered in from a number of individuals by Dr Harold Swan, consultant haemotologist. As the honorary hospital archivist, he approached past members of staff mainly of the Royal Hospital and Royal Infirmary, which resulted in a number of donations of items, not necessarily to be considered as the official hospital records themselves.
He described himself as 'preserver of all items of interest which might othewise be lost or neglected on the occasion of the closing of Sheffield's two old teaching hospitals'. The items were amassed in the hospital and then were passed to the University Library in c. 1985, where they were known as 'The Hospital Archive Collection'.
