DescriptionThe Twelve Capital Burgesses were a body of trustees chaged with the maintenance of the Sheffield Parish Church as a primary responsibility (the parish church having first claim on their revenues).

From 1554 up to 1854, the Church Burgesses role was analagous to that of Churchwardens. In 1854, a new scheme for the Church Burgesses was initiated to enable them to deal with surplus income
