The foundation stone was laid on 26 Oct 1863 and the church was consecrated on 30 Nov 1864. The church was closed in 1974 and the benefice was united with that of St Paul's Church, Masbrough. St John's Church, Masbrough was situated on College Road and was in the deanery of Rotherham.
