AdminHistory | The parish of St Barnabas was formed out of St Mary, Bramall Lane and a small part of St Andrew, Sharrow. The foundation stone for the church was laid on St Barnabas Day 1874, which was 11 June, and the church was consecrated on 16 October 1876. It was the first church in Sheffield to be lit using electricity. In 1978, the parish of St Mary with St Simon and St Matthias was united with St Barnabas. St Mary's church at Bramall Lane was still open as of 2008 for baptisms and services but St Barnabas was declared redundant in 1988 and was converted into a sheltered housing complex. St Barnabas when it was open, was in the Ecclesall deanery. |
