AdminHistory | Chapeltown was designated a Conventional District in the parish of Ecclesfield in 1844 and services (including baptisms from 1857) were held first in Lound School and then in the school at Cowley. The foundation stone of the church was laid on 3 November 1859, and the building was consecrated on 28 November 1860 when Chapeltown became an independent parish.
The churchyard was formally closed for burials in 1979 although they had effectively ceased in the 1960s, and thereafter only a few interments of cremated ashes took place up to 1971.
Between 2003 and 2005 marriages were solemnized at St Mary's Church, Ecclesfield owing to the state of disrepair of St John's Parish Church. |
CustodialHistory | The items were deposited with Sheffield Archives by the church in Aug 1983, Aug 1990, Nov 2007 and Oct 2015. |
