This diary covers the author’s years in the Eighth Battalion of Yorkshire and Lancaster, 70th Brigade, 23rd Division. An employee of Mappin and Webb, he joined up 3 September 1914, and went to training camps in Pontefract, Frersham, Aldershot, Hythe, Bromley. He went to France Aug 27 1915 and served in the trenches at Loos, Armentiere, Albert, the Somme, and Ypres. In Autumn 1917 his battalion was sent to Italy, where they fought against Austrians until the Austrian surrender Nov 3 1917. |
