Description | Society of Friends' Adult Schools grew out of ‘First Day’ Schools (referring to the first day of the week Sunday) which were set up by Joseph Rowntree (Senior) and other leading Quakers in the mid 19th century. The schools aimed to teach young people ‘to apply the teaching of the Bible to everyday life and the problems of society’ and taught reading and writing centred around scripture lessons. |
