DescriptionCD copy of BBC Radio Sheffield reel-to-reel recording of three women (Mrs Sarah Tooley aged 91, Mrs Bessie Muscroft aged 86, and Mrs Lydia Newby aged 82) recalling their munitions work during the First World War (original Sheffield Archives ref. SY425/8602/4 band 1). The women were munitions workers at John Baker & Co.'s Kilnhurst Steel Works near Mexborough and are depicted in a painting called 'The Munitions Girls' by Stanhope Forbes in 1918 which was later acquired by the Science Museum, London. They talk about the work, pay and conditions in the munitions industry after meeting up with a fourth surviving female munitions worker from the Kilnhurst Steel Works, Mrs Flora Trewin, aged 84, at the unveiling of 'The Munitions Girls' painting at the Science Museum in 1984.
