Title | William Wilberforce to Samuel Roberts, written from Highwood Hill, Middlesex (part own hand) |
Description | (Last page in own hand). Regrets the public so entirely absorbed on the subject of Parliamentary reform as to forget the slaves, but is glad to find Roberts one of their steady friends and that he has read and approved Mr Stephen’s publication. Believes Lord John Russell’s bill will produce a House of Commons more favourable to the slavery question. Does not quite like Roberts’ motto “the schoolmaster is abroad” - fears the bad consequences of the newspapers, especially the Sunday newspapers (which ought to have been suppressed) on the reading poor.
