Title | James Montgomery to Misses Mary and Jane Roberts, written from The Mount, Sheffield |
Description | Thanks them for two contributions of £5 each in aid of the United Brethren’s Missions. Defends the missionaries of the Brethren; they “never were friends of slavery in any other sense than as friends of slaves”. He has a document which shows that Mr Wilberforce’s work against slavery began from a series of conversations at the house of the late Lord Barham about the wretchedness of the slaves and the work of the Moravian missionaries which roused the sympathy of a lady who never rested until Mr Wilberforce took up the cause of abolition. Rev Benjamin Latrobe took a leading part in the conversations. Apologies for not visiting at Park Grange the previous Wednesday.
